Pinhas Rasheesh, member of the Mapai, Israel’s labor party, was today elected mayor of Petach Tikvah, defeating the outgoing General Zionist mayor, Yosef Saphir. Mr. Saphir, who is a member of the Israel Parliament, has been the mayor of Petach Tikvah for ten years.
The Mapai’s victory came as a result of support which it received from the Mapam, the Mizrachi Laborites and the Agudah Laborites. The candidate sponsored by the Mizrachi organization was defeated. Voting for him were the Mizrachi members of the Municipal Council, the General Zionists, the Agudah members, and the Herut.
