The Vancouver Labor Council today made public a resolution protesting the statement by the Immigration Minister that former members of the Nazi-formed Ukrainian Halytchyna Division would be acceptable as immigrants to Canada. The resolution said that it has been proven that the Halytchyna Division fought in the second World War on the side of the Nazis in the ranks of Hitler’s armies. It quotes the text of the bath taken by members of the Halytchyna as reading:
“You are taking your place with us to confirm your oath that you together with us all join in the front against the enemy, the entire world; against the Jews and the Bolsheviks. Happily and voluntarily you responded to the call made by Governor Wechter, and enlisted in the ranks ready to serve under our flag. This oath binds you for your entire life.”
Condemning this oath, the Labor Council resolution says: “We state that on the hands of the members of the Halytchyna Division there is the blood of hundreds of thousands of victims of Nazi brutality, among whom may also have been our Canadian boys.” The resolution was forwared to the Canadian Congress of Labor for further information and action.
