Fraternities in Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. were told by the College Board of Trustees today that they must divest themselves of any discriminatory clauses or practices “as soon as is reasonably possible.” The Board said it will make a new study around January 1, 1965, and then take whatever action is needed.
The Board revealed that 17 of 19 national fraternities at Lafayette never had, or have removed discriminatory clauses from their constitutions, and that unwritten discriminatory practices by some of the 17 are decreasing. The Board also said it supported the principle that Lafayette fraternity members should have complete freedom of choice in selecting members.
