Mayor LaGuardia received in the mail today a bullet and a note, signed with a swastika, warning that he would be killed if he continued to attack the German Nazi Party. The Mayor turned the death threat over to the Police Department of Investigation. Mayor LaGuardia, who has recently delivered outspoken attacks against the Nazi regime, two of which have involved him in German protests to the State Department, is sponsoring a Citizens’ Rally against Oppression at Carnegie Hall tomorrow night.
The bullet came in a little black box. The accompanying note, penciled in a good handwriting, said: “You will get this if you continue to attack the German Nazi Party.” The package was postmarked Long Island City, Dec. 7, 12 p.m.
Meanwhile, Fritz Kuhn, leader of the German-American Bund, attended a luncheon of the New York State Economic Council for Representative Martin Dies in the Hotel Biltmore and heard the un-American activities prober denounce Nazism as well as Communism. Kuhn arrived with some friends and sat at a Table reserved by James Wheeler-Hill, a leader of the Bund. When Mr. Dies arose to speak he addressed the audience as “fellow-Americans,” then qualified this by saying, “I mean every citizen in the united states who is sincerely devoted to the ideas and principles of this Republic,” then added, “regardless of race, church, social or economic position in leaf.” this was taken to be for Mr. Kuhn’s benefit and there was general applause.
