UNRRA Director-General Fiorello LaGuardia said today upon his arrival in the British zone in Germany that Jews fleeing Poland are entitled to UNRRA aid as persecuted persons.
LaGuardia is quoted by Reuters as denying knowledge of an alleged statement by an official British spokesman that UNRRA was aiding the underground immigration to Poland. Replying to questions as to how UNRRA officials determined who were persecuted Jewish refugees and who were members of the Jewish underground, LaGuardia said energetically: “By God-given intelligence and common sense.”
