Sen. Jacob K. Javits, New York Republican, called on American Jews this weekend to play a greater role in the war on poverty. Addressing a gathering marking the landing of the first Jews in America, 311 years ago, Sen. Javits said that “Jews, who have exhibited a kind of genius in dealing with social welfare problems among their co-religionists, must now turn this talent toward aiding other groups among the disadvantaged.”

Earlier, in a ceremony at Battery Park, a wreath was laid before a memorial to the 23 original Jewish settlers who landed in what was then New Amsterdam from Brazil in September, 1654.
