Five hundred leaders in fraternal and benevolent societies today initiated a drive for $2,000,000 as their organizations’ share of the funds to be raised by the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York in 1967. This was a major action of the 29th annual meeting of the New York UJA’s Council of Organizations, held here. Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Avraham Harman, was guest speaker at the meeting.
The Council adopted a resolution urging landsmanschaften to provide this year — in addition to their support of the 1967 UJA campaign — $1,000,000 toward the $3,000,000 construction cost of the House of World Jewry being established in Tel Aviv, in part as a memorial to the European Jewish communities destroyed by the Nazis during World War II. Many of the landsmanschaften affiliated with New York UJA’s Council of Organizations had their origin in those communities.
