Large-scale, emigration of Jews from Tripolitania was recommended today in a report to three major Jewish organizations here by Dr. B. Segal, who has just completed a tour of the country and a study of its Jewish population at the behest of the three groups.
The report, to the Central British Fund, the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Anglo-Jewish Association, declared that the 30,000 Jews in Tripolitania are suffering from a fear psychosis since the pogrom of November, 1945, in which over 100 persons died and hundreds were injured. The Jews have not yet received indemnification for damages and losses suffered in the rioting and many are completely destitute, Dr. Segal stated.
The position of the community as a whole is “very bad,” Dr. Segal asserted, adding that instances of actual starvation of Jews have been reported from outlying districts. He evaluated the day-to-day relief program of the Joint Distribution Committee and expressed the opinion that it vas not yet operating on a scale sufficient to meet minimum requirements.
For those Jews who cannot emigrate, Dr. Segal urges “constructive relief,” including grants and loans for the acquisition of raw materials and tools. Dr. Segal is now preparing a detailed report which will be discussed by the three organizations with a view to arriving at a Joint program with the J.D.C.
