An exhibit of one of the largest collections of Marc Chagall’s paintings and sculptures was opened here yesterday by Prince Takamatsu, brother of Emperor Hirohito. The noted Jewish artist was unable to attend because of health reasons. He sent a message declaring that the show was one of the memorable events of his life.
About 450 items from 15 countries were assembled for the exhibition which will be on view at the National Museum of Western Art here for six weeks. Among the exhibits are eight paintings from the Soviet Union where the artist was born. They arrived last week after Mrs. Ida Meyer-Chargall, daughter of the artist, went to Moscow and obtained permission to have the paintings sent out of Russia for the exhibit. Planning for the exhibit began seven years ago.
