A total of 146 immigrants from the United States and Canada–comprising the largest group from North America ever to come to Israel for permanent settlement–arrived here today aboard the Zim Israel liner Shalom. The group is the first of four aggregations of North American settlers expected here this summer.
Twenty-two of the newcomers are professionals, including three engineers, 11 teachers and three doctors. Ten are yeshiva students, and 21 are persons retired on Social Security. Thirteen expect to join kibbutzim. A team of Jewish Agency representatives met the immigrants upon their arrival, and a platoon of girl soldiers aided the newcomers with pre-settlement arrangements.
