The United Nations representatives in Haifa were informed today by Lt. Gen. Gordon H.A, MacMillan, British commander in Palestine, that the last British troops would be withdrawn from Palestine between June 26 and June 30, it was reported here. MacMillan yesterday transferred his headquarters from Haifa to the cruiser Phebe, located in Haifa Bay.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State for Colonies Arthur Creech-Jones refused to give assurances in Parliament today that Arabic broadcasts emanating from Cyprus would be discontinued. He said that the Cyprus government did not generally censor broadcasts, but in view of last week’s program — which advised Arab invaders in Palestine to concentrate on occupying Haifa and other coastal areas so as to cut off supplies from the Jews–the Cyprus Governor has advised the station’s management to avoid such broadcasts in the future.
