The United States Government tonight recognized ## new Jewish state of Israel as the de facto Authority in Palestine. Presidential ###ess secretary Charles G, Ross announced that the President had approved the following statement at 6:11 P.M.
“This government has been informed that a Jewish state has been proclaimed Palestine, and recognition has been requested by the Provisional Government thereof.
“The United States recognizes the Provisional Government as the de facto authority of the new state of Israel.”
Ross also released a second statement explaining how U.S. recognition affects forts to obtain a truce in Palestine. He described the second statement as a White use, not Presidential, statement.
“The desire of the United States to obtain a truce in Palatine will in no ##y by lessened by the Proclamation of a Jewish state. We hope that the new Jewish ###ate will join with the Security Council Truce Commission in redoubled efforts to ?ing about an end to the fighting which has been throughout the United Nations consideration of Palestine a principal objective of this government.”
