“President Weizmann is very actively concerned with the solution of the government crisis and is conducting constant consultations, seeking to break the deadlock at the earliest moment,” Speaker of the Parliament Joseph Sprinzak today told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency fellowing his return from a lengthy interview with the President at Rehovoth. Mr. Sprinzak expressed the hope that the crisis will be resolved shortly.
An official spokesman here said that no further developments are expected until tomorrow.
It was reliably learned that Pinhas Rosen, Progressive Minister of Justice in the defunct coalition Cabinet, tops the list of possible candidates whom Presdient Weizmann may call upon to form a new government. The combination of parties which is considered most likely to support a coalition under Dr. Rosen’s leadership are the Mapai, General Zionists, Progressives and Sephardim–a combination which can command 63 or 64 votes in the Knesset.
After his conference with the President this morning, at which he reported his failure to form a “caretaker government,” David Ben Gurion went to Haifa to witness the embarkation of a brigade of troops aboard transports in an operation in the war games now taking place in the Jewish state.
