The last of the 92 Jewish children from Buchenwald who caused a minor incident here several months ago when French authorities removed them from the jurisdiction of Jewish groups and placed them in the custody of a non-Jewish organization, left here today for Marseille en route to Palestine. They are part of a larger contingent which will embark shortly.
American solders who were waiting on the same platform as the refugees for a train which would carry them to the Riviera for furloughs joined the Palestine-bound Jews in dancing the “hora.”
Other groups are converging on Marseille for transportation to Palestine, including 78 from the famous Kibbutz Buchenwald formed by chalutzim on land outside Buchenwald after their liberation, fifteen from Dachau, several hundred from Switzerland and some from an UNRRA camp at Phillipeville, Algeria.
Allied military authorities, the Intergovernmental Refugee Committee, the French Ministry of Deportees, the JDC and the Hicem worked cooperatively in arranging the refugees’ departure. The transport will be accompanied by David Sealtiel, a Jewish Agency representative.
