Four-hundred and ten Jewish refugees from Poland, the last contingent of the Polish Jews who reached Teheran from Russia during the latter part of last year and early this year, arrived here today. They were preceded by 750 children from various countries who arrived here yesterday under the auspices of the Youth Aliyah.
The Teheran group consisted of 60 men, 70 children and 280 women, wives of men serving in the Polish army in the Middle East. All of them had high praise for the British and American authorities in Teharan, who, they said, had extended all possible assistance. The 750 children were met by Miss Henrietta Szold, head of the Youth Aliyah, whose 83rd birthday is being celebrated here today.
Opening the third annual meeting of the “Children’s and Youth Welfare Organization,” which was established to mark Miss Szold’s 80th birthday, Dr. Abraham Katznelson, chief of the Social Welfare Department of the Jewish National Council, today sharply attacked the failure of the United Nations to effect the rescue of a substantial number of Jewish children from occupied Europe. Miss Szold, reviewing the Youth Aliyah’s activities said that 10,000 children have been brought to Palestine by the organization, and added that the Jewish community here is prepared to absorb another 50,000 if they are taken out of Europe.
