The funeral services for Police Magistrate Jacob Cohen, the only Jewish magistrate in Canada, who died on May 10 in his eighty-third year, took place on Monday, with Rabbi B. Brickner of Cleveland and Rabbi M. N. Eisendrath of Toronto conducting the services.
The deceased had occupied his position on the bench since 1918. A few months ago he collapsed in his office at the City Hall, from which attack he never recovered.
Jacob Cohen was born in Cracow, Poland, and landed in New York in 1870. After he had somewhat overcome the handicap of lack of knowledge of the English language, he went to New Orleans and later to Memphis, Tenn., where he was a buyer of hides and cotton. In 1873 he settled in Toronto and for twenty-five years occupied a leading position in Jewish circles in Toronto. He was appointed as Justice of the Peace in 1907 and became Toronto’s fourth Police Magistrate in 1918.
