Israeli reaction to the possibility of Iranian volunteers deployed in south Lebanon remained low-key but wary today. Premier Menachem Begin told reporters it would not mean a major threat in military terms but would mean a significant worsening of the situation which had been quiet for the past several weeks. Israel, Begin said, was watching carefully and would be prepared for any eventuality. The presence of Iranian volunteers “could upset the present tranquility” in south Lebanon, Begin told reporters.
