The Senate, by a vote of 97-0, confirmed George Shultz as Secretary of State Thursday afternoon. Three Senators were absent. The 61-year-old former president of the Bechtel group, is scheduled to be sworn in Friday by President Reagan. He succeeds Alexander Haig as Secretary of State. Reagan, in a statement, complimented Shultz on “his impressive performance” before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during Senate hearings on his confirmation.
