Further deaths as a result of the bomb explosion in a Jaffa vegetable market last Friday today raised the Arab fatality total to 32. A Government communique denied rumors spread among the Arabs that police were implicated in the bombing.
An Arab policeman was shot and wounded as he left a cafe by unidentified assailants who also wounded three patrons, one of them seriously. The policeman fired at the attackers, but missed. A post office van from Haifa was held up near Jerusalem and mail consigned to Jerusalem was stolen.
Arab newspapers reported that 200 Arabs were arrested near Karkur after ten miles of telephone line had been cut near Ashoud. Arabs have decided to post their own guards at vegetable markets throughout the country, it was reported. Police in Nablus dynamited the house of a prominent sheikh for harboring a wounded bandsman.
The Arab press published an interview with izzat Tannous, Arab leader who is now in London, who was quoted as declaring that Britain’s Palestine Partition Commission would drop the partition plan and propose a new solution of the Palestine problem. Meanwhile, Ragheb Bey Nashashibi, leader of the Arab Defense Party, left by airplane for a stay of several months in Europe.
