A burst of machine-gun fire wounded two British police in today’s Zion Square rioting. In all, 85 persons had been taken to Hadassah Hospital and 20 more to other hospitals by tonight, among them many women and children.

Abraham Katznelson, vice-president of the Jewish National Council, who was among the injured, charged that the police were “unbelievably brutal” in their handling of the crowds, even storming into a bus station and beating up people who had sought refuge there. Police tonight turned off street lights in midtown.
At a meeting in Jerusalem’s Jeshuron Synagogue, Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog tore up a copy of the White Paper. Menachem M. Ussishkin, 75-year-old president of the Jewish National Fund, declared in a speech that Britain had betrayed the Abyssinians, the Czechs and the Jews and would finally betray the Arabs. The Jews’ fatal mistake, he said, was to rely on England and not understand that the Jews and Arabs shared the same aspirations. He added that the Arabs would not gain liberty through the White Paper, for the real power would remain in the same hands.
