With the result of the Palestine debate a foregone conclusion, the only surprise was the Government’s unimpressive majority of 39 in Commons. Lord Dufferin and Ava, speaking in the House of Lords to clarify the Government’s position as stated in Commons last night by Foreign Undersecretary Butler, left no doubt that the Government would not seek League approval for the policy. He stated bluntly that if the Mandates Commission took the view that the policy was inconsistent with the mandate, then Britain would ask the League Council to amend the mandate to conform to the policy.
