DEEP DIFFERENCES AMONG ZIONIST CONGRESS DELEGATES ON ACCEPTANCE OF THE PRINCIPLE OF PALESTINE PARTITION WERE REVEALED AT TONIGHT’S CLOSED SESSION.
RABBI MEIR BERLIN, PRESIDENT OF MIZRACHI, SAID THE JEWS HAD NO RIGHT TO VOTE THAT PART OF THEIR LAND BE GIVEN TO OTHERS, ADDING THAT REJECTION OF PARTITION DID NOT MEAN AN EXPRESSION OF NON-CONFIDENCE IN ANYBODY.
DR. M. KLEINBAUM, GENERAL ZIONIST GROUP A LEADER, SUGGESTED A FIGHT FOR WIDER FRONTIERS FOR THE PROPOSED JEWISH STATE. DAVID REMEZ, PALESTINE LABOR LEADER, DECLARED PARTITION AS RECOMMENDED BY THE ROYAL COMMISSION WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE AND URGED THAT THE SCHEME BE DISCUSSED AGAIN AFTER IT WAS MODIFIED. THE CONGRESS SHOULD NEITHER ACCEPT NOR REJECT THE ROYAL COMMISSION’S PROPOSALS, HE SAID.
A RESOLUTION ADOPTED AT A CONFERENCE OF LABORITES FOLLOWS:
“THE CONGRESS SHOULD EMPOWER THE EXECUTIVE TO BRING ABOUT INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION OF THE HISTORIC CONNECTION BETWEEN THE JEWISH PEOPLE AND ERETZ YISROEL (THE LAND OF ISRAEL) AND FULFILLMENT OF OBLIGATIONS TO THE JEWS UNDER THE MANDATE.
“THE EXECUTIVE SHOULD NEGOTIATE WITH THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT FOR CLARIFICATION OF THE MEANING OF THE PROPOSALS REGARDING A JEWISH STATE. THE EXECUTIVE SHOULD PUT THE RESULTS OF THE NEGOTIATIONS BEFORE A NEWLY-ELECTED CONGRESS, BUT SHOULD NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO COMMIT ITSELF AND THE ZIONIST ORGANIZATION TO THE PROPOSALS BEFORE A DECISION OF THE NEW CONGRESS.”
DR. NAHUM GOLDMANN, MEMBER OF THE ZIONIST EXECUTIVE, DENIED TONIGHT REPORTS PUBLISHED IN A BULLETIN OF THE JEWISH STATE PARTY THAT THE EXECUTIVE HAD ACCEPTED THE PARTITION SCHEME SUBJECT TO MODIFICATION.
