Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, urging the House of Commons to help shape the public order bill referred to in King Edward’s speech this morning opening the new session of Parliament, made a strong plea today for action to preserve tolerance.
“All British citizens, ” he declared, “without distinction are entitled to carry on lawful occupations without fear of violence and intimidation. Respecting law and order themselves, they are entitled to the protection that accompanies law and order. We will not tolerate for a moment intimidation of any parties in this country.” The declaration was greeted with cheers.
