President Johnson views the newest violence in the Middle East with “great concern,” Presidential press secretary George Christian reported today at the Texas White House. He also said the United States continued to support the mission of United Nations emissary Gunnar V. Jarring as “the most appropriate way” to seek Mideast peace. It was indicated that the latest White House evaluation was that the Arab-Israeli situation “tends to be quite critical in the sense of the events that have transpired in the last few weeks.”
Mr. Christian added that the President was worried about the “tensions, hostilities, and the absence of peace” in the Middle East. He stressed that “we have always looked to the United Nations for a solution.”
