Jewish leaders from six Latin American countries expressed the hope here today that Catholic Church leaders in Latin America would implement the Ecumenical Council declaration against anti-Semitism among Catholics.
The leaders were delegates from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay to the ninth plenary session of the South American executive of the World Jewish Congress. They lauded the action of the Council last Friday in passing the declaration on Jews in a resolution which cited the need for a ban on anti-Semitic activities by Catholic clergy and for elimination of anti-Jewish materials in Catholic school textbooks.
The delegates also approved a resolution asking the West German Government to extend the statute of limitations for prosecution of Nazi war crimes in Germany beyond next May. The delegates paid tribute to the memory of President Kennedy and considered evaluations of the Jewish situation in South America.
