The governing board of the Latin American Jewish Congress, in a special meeting last week commemorating the end of World War II and the liberation of the death camps, declared the full commitment of Jewish communities in South America to the cause of human rights everywhere without regard to the political, social or economic regimes under which the people live. The board noted the Nazi defeat did not end genocidal beliefs and practices.
The board members, who came from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, also pledged their full commitment to Israel and its efforts to establish a just and lasting peace. The Congress rejected the idea of a secular Palestinian state saying that it would result in the destruction of Israel.
