The Jewish population of Dvinsk paid its last tribute to Rabbi Meir Simche Kaz, the famous Gaon of Dvinsk, who died here last week at the age of 81. The funeral of the late rabbi took place yesterday in Dvinsk, where the remains were conveyed. All the rabbis in Latvia, representatives of all the Jewish communities in the country, and the whole Jewish population of Dvinsk attended the funeral. The Jewish shops in Dvinsk were kept closed all day.
Rabbi Meir Simche Kaz was born in 1845 in the Lithuanian town of Baltermanz. He was a student of the Yeshiva of Slobodka and on graduating was appointed Rabbi in Bialystok. He was then called to Dvinsk where he was Rabbi for thirty-nine years. He was regarded as one of the greatest rabbinical authorities in the world.
Theodore Jaekel, United States Consul General in Warsaw, is named as defendant in an action filed by John Downarowitz, of Jersey City, N. J., in the United States District Court, to recover $3,500 because, it is alleged. Mr. Jaekel refused to visa the passport of Downarowitz’s wife.
