Wilhelm Latzki-Bertholdi, labor leader, Zionist and writer, died here yesterday of heart failure. He was 59 years old.
Born in Kiev, Russia, Latzki-Bertholdi was raised and educated in Riga, was a founder of the Socialist Zionist party in Russia and also helped organize the Jewish Peoples’ Party there. After the war, he became vice-president of the Jewish National Assembly in the Ukraine.
Latzki-Bertholdi was among the first to stir interest in the Jewish emigration problem, advocating the idea of organizing emigration on the basis of democratic self-help. He lived in Berlin for a time, working for the Ullstein Verlag. He visited New York in 1908 as a member of the Territorialist Commission. His articles have been published by Yiddish newspapers throughout the world.
