Much of the credit for settling Milwaukee’s violent five-day utility strike is being given today to Julius P. Heil, prominent local Jewish manufacturer.
Heil succeeded, where others failed, in bringing S. B. Way, president of the electric company, and trade union leaders together around the round-table. With that achieved, settlement of the strike came in short order.
During the walkout mobs of as high as 30,000 attacked street cars and trolley barns of the electric company, bringing the city close to anarchy and virtually forcing the utility to accede to the strikers’ demands.
