Headed by Louis Bamberger, who contributed $2,500, representative Newark Jews at a banquet in the Y. M-W. H. A. Sunday night, pledged nearly $15,000, or 25 per cent of the $60,000 quota being sought here in the interests of the B’nai B’rith Wider Scope Committee and the Menorah Association. The dinner marked the formal opening of the campaign, which is being conducted as a memorial to the late Felix Fuld.
Mr. Fuld, previous to his death, had accepted the honorary chairmanship of the drive, a post now being filled by Mr. Bamberger. Stirring eulogies of the late merchant’s achievements as a Jew, citizen and philanthropist, were delivered by Supreme Court Justice Joseph M. Proskauer and Rabbi Nathan Krass, both of New York. Terming Mr. Fuld “a lover of mankind,” Justice Proskauer declared the joint drive “is a most fitting memorial, for while he was a leader in industry, in finance, in civic life, never did he forget for one minute, the race and lineage from which he sprang.”
Rabbi Krass lamented the passing of Mr. Fuld, whose friend he was for twenty years. he dwelt upon the work being accomplished by the Hillel Foundation of the I. O. B. B.
Supreme Court Commissioner Joseph Kraemer, drive chairman, acted as toastmaster.
