New regulations, permitting marriage between an Israeli and a member of the Bene Israel community of Jews in India, were issued here today, reversing a previous ban against such unions and concluding a protracted controversy on the subject.

All Israeli rabbis received today from Chief Rabbi Yitztak Nissim new directives in line with a recent Rabbinical decision on the issue. Each rabbi received also a 300-page volume containing the background of the controversy and reasoned opinions on the issue by many rabbis, some of the opinions dating back 150 years.
