Leading lawyers of the city will meet at the Hotel Astor Wednesday evening, January 3, to discuss methods of checking the defrauding of American consumers through the misrepresentation of merchandise imported from Germany. The call for the meeting was issued yesterday by the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League to Champion Human Rights, of which Samuel Untermyer is president.
Among the prominent attorneys who signed the call are former Judge Victor J. Dowling, Appellate Division Justice Arthur S. Tompkins, and former Ambassador James W. Gerard.
After citing the large number of complaints received by the League and the accumulation of evidence of misrepresentation of German goods, the League call pointed out that the law requiring the stamping of all imported articles with the name of the country of origin was being violated. A large amount of German goods destined for the retail trade was reported inadequately marked or not marked at all.
On January 3, a conference of representatives of 500 Jewish youth groups of New York will be held at the Hotel Pennsylvania, the League announced. Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver of Cleveland, vice-president of the League, will speak on the “Moral Aspects of the Boycott.”
