Mrs. Rabinowitz, the widow of the late Jewish humorist and playwright, Sholom Aleichem, and Joseph Barondess laid the cornerstone of the Yiddish Art Theatre, which will be housed in the new Louis N. Jaffe Art Theatre Building at Twelfth Street and Second Avenue, New York, on Sunday.
A portrait of Abraham Goldfaden, “the father of the Yiddish Theatre movement,” and one of Peter Stuyvesant, whose estate once owned the theatre site, were placed in the cornerstone.
The theatre is expected to be completed by the opening of the Fall season.
Herman Bernstein presided. Among the speakers were: Dr. Nathan Krass of Temple Emanu-El, Alexander H. Geismar, first assistant district attorney of Kings County; George J. Curtis, former Commissioner of Accounts; Maurice Schwartz, director of the theatre: Dr. Joseph Kling, head of the Sholom Aleichem Schools; Dr. A. Moukdoni, Dr. S. Margoshes, L. Kessner, Jacob Fishman, and Louis N. Jaffe, the builder of the theatre, delivered addresses.
The Tifereth Israel Synagogue of Morristown, Pa., will be rebuilt according to a decision reached at a meeting of the congregation. Work on the new building will be started in October. Simon Slabosky is president of the congregation.
