In the new democratic Rumania following an Allied victory, Jews deprived of citizenship will be reinstated, Dragu Matoescu, former secretary-general of the English-Rumanian Society in Bucharest, economic attache of the Rumanian Legation in London and now one of the leaders of the Rumanian Democratic Committee, told the J.T.A. today.
Matoescu said the committee would welcome the collaboration of Rumanian Jews. He declared the committee’s immediate aim was to raise a Rumanian legion to fight on the side of the Allies. Expressing hope that the cooperation of Rumanian Jews in America could be secured, he said:
“Needless to say, we stand for full rights for Rumanian Jews and condemn any discrimination against them. We cannot blind ourselves to the fact that a Jewish problem exists in Rumania, but to a large extent this is due to the attitude of the previous regime, some elements of which tried to stir up artificially a movement against the Jews.”
The Democratic Committee strongly opposes Virgil Tilea’s Free Rumanian National Committee, which it accuses of being pro-Carol, whom the Democratic Committee holds responsible for the tragedy in Rumania. The committee asserts it has strong backing from some influential labor members of the British Government.
