Eminent Leader Re-elected President of Temple Emanu-El

Louis Marshall, President of the American Jewish Committee and recognized leader of American Jewry will attain his seventy-second birthday tomorrow, Friday, December 14.

Messages of felicitation have been sent to Mr. Marshall by his associates in the many Jewish causes he furthers and by prominent leaders in many fields of activity.

At the annual meeting of Temple Emanu-El recently amalgamated with Temple Beth-El, held Tuesday evening in the completed part of the new Temple Emanu-El at Fifth Avenue and Sixty-fifth Street, New York, Mr. Marshall was re-elected president of the Temple.

In a statement to the “Jewish Daily Bulletin” on the occasion of Mr. Marshall’s birthday, Felix M. Warburg, who has been closely associated with Mr. Marshall in many of his communal and philanthropic works for the good of Jewry, declared: “We all congratulate Mr. Marshall on his seventy-second birthday. His zeal for humanitarian and Jewish causes imbues him with increasing vigor. Every day he takes on new obligations in his manifold work.

“The way he carries on his beneficent work, the capacity with which he shoulders innumerable communal responsibilities are indeed short of marvelous.

“I had occasion to personally witness the indefatigable zeal he displayed during the London meeting of the Palestine Joint Survey Commission. It was a memorable inspiration,” Mr. Warburg stated.

Ludwig Vogelstein, chairman of the Board of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, in a telegram he despatched to Mr. Marshall, stated: “Personally and in behalf of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, I extend my heartiest congratulations on the occasion of your seventy-second birthday and my sincerest wish that you may be spared for many years to enjoy perfect health in order that you may continue to give of your invaluable service to the cause of the Jewish people and humanity as you have done during the past fifty years. It would be presumptuous if I were to evaluate your achievements and efforts in behalf of the Jews, in behalf of mankind as well as for your State and country. We all pray for your continued good health and happiness.”

Morris Rothenberg, Vice-President, Zionist Organization of America, in a statement to the Jewish Daily Bulletin, declared: “During the past year Mr. Marshall has added an achievement to the many others of his illustrious life which holds immeasurable value for the future of Jewry–his successful leadership in bringing about the joining of American non-Zionist forces with the Zionist Organization in the cause of Palestine upbuilding. On this, his seventy-second birthday, I join with his countless friends in the hope that he may long continue to enjoy the fullness of those extraordinary gifts which are a blessing to his people.”

“Seventy-two? Impossible. Louis Marshall is just twenty-seven.”–James N. Rosenberg.
