Leaders of Judaism’s three main streams urged President Clinton to commute Jonathan Pollard’s life sentence for spying for Israel. In their letter to Clinton, the Reform, Conservative and Orthodox leader declared that the Jewish faith is “predicated on the spirit of penitence” and urged the president to “grant mercy” to Pollard, who is serving his term in an American prison.
