Leaders of the major faiths in this country have failed “to react with goodwill and tolerance” to the issue of religion in the public schools, Judge David A. Rose, national civil rights chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, declared here last night.
He spoke before the 106th annual convention of District Number One of B’nai B’rith here, which is being attended by 1,600 delegates. The district encompasses some 100,000 members of B’nai B’rith in the northeastern states.
Judge Sidney Sugarman of the United States District Court told the delegates that the recent bombings of synagogues in the South have “added a new dimension to the integration struggle for the Jewish community.” However, he continued, “the battle is primarily for equal rights for all Americans and for the maintenance of law and order.”
