Leading American and Israeli scholars, writers, public officials and communal leaders will explore “American Jewry and Israel: Reciprocal Rights and Responsibilities” at the eighth annual American-Israel Dialogue sponsored by the American Jewish Congress August 3 to 6 at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovoth, Israel. Participants will Include Rep. Allard K. Lowenstein of Long Island, Gad Yaacovi a member of the Knesset plus professors of law and political science from Harvard University, University of Michigan, City University of New York, Hebrew University, Bar-Ilan University and Weizmann institute. In formal papers and free-wheeling debate the Dialogue theme will be discussed in terms of “Values and Institutions,” “Culture and the Arts,” and “Domestic and International Politics.” Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld of Cleveland, president of the AJ Congress, announcing the symposium, declared: “We will attempt to probe not only the cultural and religious links between our two communities but also the nature of the social and political responsibilities that each of us owes the other. This is a complicated and sensitive subject and will demand sober and searching conversation. Especially in the light of recent events in both the United States and Israel, a careful assessment of these ties has become imperative.”
