League Body Urges Cooperation with Roosevelt Refugee Plan

The League of Nations Council’s Committee on International Assistance to Refugees tonight drafted a report for submission to the Council tomorrow recommending close cooperation with President Roosevelt’s plan for international aid to refugees.

President Roosevelt’s proposal to establish an international committee to facilitate refugee emigration was welcomed by the chairman of the committee at its meeting today. The committee comprises the delegates of Britain, France and Bolivia.

The committee’s report will recommend:

1–That the League organizations dealing with refugees coordinate their activities with the refugee committee proposed by President Roosevelt;

2–That the League High Commissioner for German Refugees, as well as a representative of the Nansen Office for “stateless” refugees, should attend the conference of 28 states called by the United States Government which is expected to meet in June at a place not yet announced;

3–That the High Commissioner and the Nansen Office be amalgamated under one commissioner and divided into two sections, one for holders of Nansen passports and the other for German and Austrian refugees.

Meanwhile, the revision of Jewish citizenships being carried out in Rumania continued to hold attention. Following Rumania’s reported refusal to modify the terms of the revision decree, Foreign Minister George Bonnet of France conferred with Foreign Minister Nicolas Petrescu-Comnen of Rumania regarding Jewish petitions charging the Rumanian Government with violation of the 1919 Minorities Treaty. The World Jewish Congress executive committee officially denied a report, ostensibly from Rumanian sources, that Jewish organizations had withdrawn the petitions.
