AT ITS OPENING SESSION TODAY THE COUNCIL OF THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNANIMOUSLY EMPOWERED COUNCIL PRESIDENT NEGRIN OF SPAIN TO APPOINT A SUBCOMMITTEE TO STUDY WITH RAPPORTEUR ANTONESCU OF RUMANIA THE MANDATES COMMISSION’S REPORT ON PALESTINE, WHICH PRESENTS GREAT BRITAIN’S PROPOSAL TO CREATE INDEPENDENT JEWISH AND ARAB STATES THROUGH TRIPARTITION OF THE HOLY LAND.
THE COMMITTEE, WHICH IS EXPECTED TO BE NAMED BEFORE TODAY’S SESSION IS ENDED, WILL HOLD ITS FIRST MEETING NEXT MONDAY.
A PROPOSAL MADE BY MR. ANTONESCU, SUPPORTED BOTH BY FOREIGN SECRETARY EDEN OF GREAT BRITAIN AND FOREIGN MINISTER BECK OF POLAND, PROVIDES THAT A SMALL COMMITTEE SHALL THOROUGHLY STUDY THE PALESTINE QUESTION AND DRAFT A REPORT FOR SUBMISSION TO THE COUNCIL.
CAPTAIN EDEN ANNOUNCED THAT WHEN THE MANDATES COMMISSION’S REPORT, WHICH RECOMMENDS AN “APPRENTICESHIP” PERIOD FOR THE TWO PROPOSED STATES UNDER SEPARATE BRITISH MANDATES, IS BEING CONSIDERED, HE WILL MAKE A STATEMENT ON PALESTINE IN THE NAME OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT.
