League of British Jews Says It Will Continue to Advocate Its Principles

Doubts as to whether “the continued existence of the League of British Jews is necessary” are answered in the tenth annual report of the organization, a non-Zionist body, issued in connection with the forthcoming annual meeting on May 9.

The question was raised in the report which declares that “during 1927 the League was not needed to take any action requiring public notice.” With the decline of the attacks on the political status of British Jews and the League’s aims have been realized. settlement of the Palestinian question “in approximation with the principles of the League of British Jews,” it is urged, the report states, that the

In reply to these doubts the report declares: “This plea has force but it would be shortsighted to ignore the fact that even in this country signs exist of some opposition to the principles on which the Jews obtained complete civil and political emancipation. Moreover, the continued existence of the League is a standing protest and barrier against anyone seeking to foist on the Jews an additional bond of nationality above the religious one which for 2,000 years has sufficed to unite them in spiritual brotherhood.”

The report is signed by Lionel Rothschild. president of the United Synagogue who is also president of the League. The League is described as an association of British subjects professing the Jewish religion.

SILVERMAN RESIGNATION ACCEPTED BY HADASSAH

The resignation of Mrs. Archibald Silverman from the vice-presidency of the Hadassah. women’s Zionist organization. was accepted by the National Board of Hadassah, it was announced yesterday.

“Let us hope that you will in time come. if not to agree with us. at least to recognize that our actions are directed not by ‘a spirit of rancor and hatred.’ as you declare, but only by our deep concern as Zionists.

“Please believe that while necessarily accepting your resignation we are not unmindful of the excellent service you have long rendered Hadassah in unstinted measure.” the National Board declared in their letter regretiully accepting the resignation.

Professor Salo Baron of the Department of History of the Jewish Institute of Religion has been called to the Jewish Seminary of ## to fill the Chair of Jewish History. Professor Baron has not yet announced his decision as to whether he will accept the invission.
