Lebanon complained to the Security Council yesterday that Israeli armed forces shelled the Lebanese village on Almajydiah last Sunday, wounding two Lebanese soldiers, damaging three houses and killing livestock. The Lebanese representative, Ambassador Edouard Ghorra, said in a letter that about 100 mortar shells were fired by Israeli forces based at Alabasyiah, a village in occupied Syrian territory. “This act of aggression was unprovoked and has no justification whatsoever,” Mr. Ghorra said. “It is but another act in the series of aggressive acts perpetrated by Israel against Lebanon, thus endangering peace and increasing tension in the area.”
A report from Lt. Gen. Odd Bull, chief of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East, has confirmed a Lebanese complaint that the village of Almajydiah was shelled from Israeli territory during the night of Oct. 26-27. The report said that an on-the-scene investigation by UN observers and the testimony of witnesses showed that about 120 mortar shells were fired in about 40 salvos.
