The principal address of a convention of teachers and principals of Jewish schools held yesterday in the auditorium of the Society for Advancement of Judaism, was delivered by Dr. Lee K. Frankel, Vice-president of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Dr Frankel’s subject was “Insurance and Pension System,” and he pointed out the importance as well as the basic principles upon which teachers’ insurance and pension system should be based.
Dr. Frankel urged the adoption of a system of pension and insurance by the Jewish teacher with the assistance of certain communal agencies, and expressed the belief that such a system was especially important in their case in view of the inadequate salaries which they were receiving. No teacher, he stated, could render the best service if he found himself oppressed by economic problems and worries concerning the future.
Dr Frankel was followed by Samuel Dinin, representing the Jewish Teachers Association and Morris Schiffman, representing the Hebrew Teachers Union, both of whom spoke on the subject of a “Placement Bureau for Teachers of Jewish Religious Schools.” A paper on the subject of “Salaries of Jewish Teachers” was read by Israel S. Chipkin, Educational Director of the Jewish Education Association. Mr. Chipkin’s paper was a statistical study which showed the extent to which the prevailing salaries fell below established minimum living standards. An address upon “What the Community Owes to the Jewish Teacher” was delivered by Bernard Semel, Honorary Secretary of the Jewish Education Association.
