Captain Joshua L. Goldberg, Chaplain Corps, U.S. Navy, Third Naval District Chaplain, who is retiring from active naval service, was presented today with the Legion of Merit by Vice Admiral. Thomas S. Combs, Commandant of the Third Naval District, in a ceremony at the headquarters.
The award was made in recognition of “exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services as District Chaplain, Third Naval District, from August 1949 to January 1960.”
The citatation noted that “in his role as a special representative of the Chief of Nava-Operations on a trip to Israel concerning matters of a delicate nature and important implications in the field of international relations, Chaplain Goldberg succeeded in achieving an understanding whereby a Naval Attache was assigned to Tel Aviv, and problems regarding visits by units of the Sixth Fleet to Israeli ports were amicably resolved.”
