A movement to elect Herman N. Schwartz, commander of the Philadelphia County Council, American Legion, as department commander, was launched today by Philadelphia Legionnaires.
First to endorse Commander Schwartz was the Frederick D. and Irving S. Clair Post, No. 37, of 2033 North Thirty-third street, largest post in the Fourth Congressional District. Other posts of the district are expected to follow this week. Through Commander Schwartz’ efforts Legion membership has increased and greater recognition has been given the organization.
Should Schwartz decide to be a candidate it will mean a battle between the eastern and western parts of the State. Allegheny County virtually has endorsed John G. Watson, of East Liberty Post, Pittsburgh, as its candidate, while other western counties have endorsed J. Ernest Isherwood, of Waynesburg.
The election is one of the closing events of the annual department convention and will take place on August 18, in Erie.
