Governor Herbert H. Lehman in a letter to Morris Margulies, secretary of the Zionist organization of America, appealed for contributions by the Jews in New York City to be used in settling German Jewish children in Palestine.
The appeal which is made on the occasion of a farewell concert for Professor Albert Einstein to be held Sunday, April 1, on the eve of his departure for Europe, said “the cause of salvaging the innocent children from the plight of outcasts in the schools and in the general scheme of German life demands immediate action.”
Proceeds of the Einstein concert will be used in sending the young victims of German Nazism to Palestine. Dr. Einstein will deliver his farewell address to the United States. Leopold Godowsky, pianist, is chairman of the committee in charge. Sponsors are the Council of Jewish Organizations on Palestine and the New York Zionist Region.
Gov. Lehman’s message said in part: “The children are altogether helpless against the devastating assaults of Nazi intolerance and discrimination. I am certain that New York Jewry will give this concert its unstinting support and thus demonstrate its deep interest and sympathy in the present emergency in Jewish life.”
The Council of Jewish Organizations on Palestine is raising funds in cooperation with the American Palestine Campaign of the Jewish Agency. The latter is cooperating with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee in seeking a fund of $3,000,000 for the relief of German Jewish refugees. Heading the Council’s drive are Magistrate Jonah J. Goldstein and Magistrate Benjamin E. Greenspan.
