Governor Herbert H. Lehman, addressing the 52nd annual convention of Independent Order B’rith Abraham, today urged assistance to those looking for homes in other countries and appealed to Britain to open Palestine’s doors to refugees. Demanding that Palestine be maintained as a spiritual center of the Jewish people, the Governor praised the assistance of the United Jewish Appeal to refugees and lauded the work of the Jewish pioneers in the Holy Land.

Mr. Lehman voiced gratitude that human rights and liberties still existed on America’s soil and appealed to the delegates to help preserve this freedom. He termed the order a great power for the preservation of democracy in this country. The Governor was introduced by Samuel Goldstein Grandmaster of the Order, as a great American Jew whose services served as a challenge to those who attacked the Jewish people as Communistic.

The convention, with 800 delegates attending, opened yesterday with the reading of Grandmaster Goldstein’s message. Other speakers were Dr. Stephen S. Wise, Mayor Mallory and Dr. Samuel Margoshes.
