Director General Herbert H. Lehman of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration met today with leaders of Italian Jewry to discuss the special relief problems of the Jews of Italy.
A Jewish spokesman presented a request for special UNRRA aid for Italian Jewish refugees and Jews from other countries who are now here. He said that their needs could best be met in separate Jewish camps, or in special sections of the refugee camps. He pointed out that with 1,000,000 Italian refugees returning from all parts of Europe, the $5,000,000 allocated by UNRRA for refugee work in this country will not go very far, particularly for the Jews, who have been stripped of all their resources. Mr. Lehman agreed to consider these proposals, but made no commitments.
The conference was arranged by Benjamin Brook, Joint Distribution Committee representative here, and was attended by Guiseppi Nathan, president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, Vitale Milano, president of the Rome Jewish community; Raffaele Cantoni, commissioner of the Milan Jewish community and leaders of other principal Jewish institutions.
