Former Gov. Lehman, director-general of UNRRA, today praised the Palestine Economic Corp. for its development of Palestine and predicted that even after the end of “the Nazi course” it would be the only refuge for thousands of persecuted European Jews.
“The development of Palestine and the progress made by the settlers and pioneers over the past quarter of a century has been almost unique in modern history,” Lehman said in a letter to Bernard Flexner, recently elected chairman emeritus of the PEC board. “During the past several years, particularly, it has served as a haven for many thousands of refugees who had no other place to which they could go. Even now, when the Nazi curse is rapidly coming to an end, Palestine will still offer the only refuge for many thousands of our persecuted co-religionists.”
