Governor Herbert II. Lehman was renominated by the Democratic party as its standard bearer in the coming New York State gubernatorial elections by acclamation. He was placed in the running by his intimate friend and early political sponsor, former Governor Alfred E. Smith. It was Smith who joined with Franklin D. Roosevelt two years ago to force Governor Lehman’s nomination from the hands of the unwilling Tammany organization.
The “Happy Warrior” was in good form as he made the speech renominating Governor Lehman. He defended the Democratic administrations of Lehman, President Roosevelt and himself from charges of waste and lack of economy that the Republicans seem bent upon leveling at the Democrats.
“During the next few weeks,” said Governor Smith, “you are going to hear a lot of ‘bunk’ about Democratic waste and extravagance. It’s all bunk. The Republicans won’t get away with it, though they accused both the President and Lehman as well as myself of the same thing. Nobody was more careful in the handling of the State’s money than President Roosevelt and Lehman. The people of the state will thoroughly understand that.”
Mr. Smith paid high tribute to Governor Lehman and said that it would be inconceivable to him if on election day the people of the state did not say, “Well done good and faithful servant.”
